  3. Microsoft Internet Explorer v.1.6 Beta for Windows 3.1

  6. Overview
  7.  
  8. Microsoft Internet Explorer v.1.6 Beta for Windows 3.1 is an early 
  9. release primarily intended for Windows 3.1/3.11 and  WFW 3.1/3.11 users 
  10. who are connected to a local area network (LAN).  This product will 
  11. allow you to browse and view HTML documents on the network, as well as 
  12. documents on the world wide web or Internet provided your network is 
  13. connected to the Internet.  Other services, such as Gopher and FTP, are 
  14. also available.

  16. If you are not on a LAN, but have an existing TCP/IP connection, a
  17. dialer and an account with an Internet service provider (ISP)
  18. you can also use this product.  Instructions for installing Microsoft 
  19. Internet Explorer v.1.6 Beta for Windows 3.1 on your system are provided 
  20. below.  Also, future versions of this product will include all the 
  21. software you need to establish new accounts (TCP/IP protocol stack, 
  22. dialer and ISP account registration software).

  30. Requirements:

  32.     Win 32s libraries

  34. Microsoft Internet Explorer v.1.6 Beta for Windows 3.1 is a 32 bit 
  35. application. In order to run this software on Microsoft Windows 3.1x 
  36. or Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.1x, which are 16 bit operating 
  37. systems, you must install Win 32s version 1.30A or later.  If you have 
  38. already installed Win 32s for use with other applications, you can 
  39. check the version number in the Win32s.ini file located in your 
  40. \windows\system directory.  If you are running Windows for Workgroups, 
  41. start File Manager and select the win32s16.dll file in your 
  42. \windows\system directory.  Press File | Properties from your menu 
  43. bar to view the version number.  If you do not have Win 32s installed, 
  44. it is available for download at:

  50.     TCP/IP Stack & Dialer
  51.  
  52. A TCP/IP network protocol stack and a dialer (often referred to as
  53. winsock.dll) are required to access the internet through an ISP.  As
  54. mentioned above, this version of the Internet Explorer requires that
  55. these components be installed before running the Internet Explorer.
  56.  
  57. If you are accessing the internet through a LAN or simply browsing your
  58. internal network (intranet) your network administrator can provide you
  59. with the appropriate version of  winsock.dll.
  60.  
  61. Installation Instructions:
  62.  
  63. 1. Create a temporary directory on you computer.
  64. 2. Download the Internet Explorer and place MSIE16.EXE in the
  65.    temporary directory
  66. 3. Run MSIE16.EXE file from File Manager to extract the program
  67.    files.
  68. 4. Read the instructions below for LAN installations and for installing
  69.    with existing TCP/IP connections.
  70. 5. Run Install.exe from File Manager.   Install will install the following
  71.    directory and files in the directory you specify:

  74.  client.gif
  75.  home.htm
  76.  space.gif
  77.  basic.dll
  78.  iexplore.cnt
  79.  iexplore.exe
  80.  iexplore.hlp
  81.  ra.dll
  82.  raplayer.exe

  84.  raplayer.hlp
  85.  ratask.exe
  86.  readme.txt

  88. 6. You may delete the temporary directory you created and its
  89.    contents if desired.
  90. 7. Run Internet Explorer
  91.

  96.     LAN Installations
  97.  
  98. Upon completing the steps outlined above you should be ready to use
  99. Internet Explorer over your LAN.  If you encounter any problems consult
  100. with your network administrator.  He/she can check to ensure that your
  101. PATH in autoexec.bat is configured so that you are using the
  102. appropriate winsock.dll.
  103.  
  104. Proxy servers may also be used provided they are CERN compliant.
  105. To enable use of  a proxy server select View | Set Proxy Server and
  106. check the Use Proxy Server control.  Next, enter the proxy server
  107. name in the location provided.
  108.  
  109.     Installation with Existing TCP/IP Connections and ISP Accounts
  110.  
  111. Internet Explorer has been installed and tested with several of the
  112. most popular Internet access products available today.  If configured
  113. properly you should be able to use the TCP/IP stack and dialer
  114. (via winsock.dll) provided with these products to connect with
  115. your ISP.
  116.  
  117. In general, all that is required is that you configure your PATH
  118. command in autoexec.bat so that Internet Explorer can find the
  119. winsock.dll file you are using to connect to the internet.  For
  120. example, if your winsock.dll is in the directory C:\CONNECT, you
  121. would modify the path to read PATH=C:\CONNECT.
  122.  
  123. Below we have included procedures for installing Internet
  124. Explorer over some common internet access products.  Other
  125. packages available include FTP Software, Network TeleSystems and
  126. shareware from Trumpet Software
  127. (http://www.trumpet.com.au/wsk/winsock.htm).

  129. (Note: Instructions below require that you have already
  130. installed Win 32s.)
  131.  
  132. Internet Chameleon 4.5
  133.  
  134. 1. Install Internet Explorer to the suggested default directory
  135.    (C:\IEXPLORE)
  136. 2. Ensure that the Internet Chameleon directory is in your path.  If
  137.    it is not, add it to the PATH statement in C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT and reboot
  138.    your system.
  139. 3. Run the Internet Chameleon dialer application (icon called Custom),
  140.    select the line corresponding to your current Internet Service
  141.    Provider, and ensure that the "Dial on Demand" option is set
  142.    (menu option Setup/Dial on Demand).  This will make the dialer
  143.    application run when the Internet Explorer tries to connect
  144.    to the Internet.

  146. Running
  147.  
  148. Start the Internet Explorer application by clicking on the
  149. "Microsoft Internet Explorer" icon in Program Manager.
  150.  
  151. If you have configured the Chameleon dialer to dial on demand, an
  152. Internet connection will be made when you first enter an Internet
  153. address in Internet Explorer.
  154.  
  155. If you have not configured the Chameleon dialer to dial on demand,
  156. you will need to start that application before starting Internet
  157. Explorer.
  158.  
  159.     Netscape Navigator 1.2 Personal Edition
  160.  
  161. 1.  Install Internet Explorer to the directory which contains your
  162.     Netscape Navigator files.  For instance, if you installed the
  163.     Netscape browser in the default directory (C:\NETSCAPE) place the
  164.     Internet Explorer files in the same location.
  165. 2.  Run Internet Explorer
  166.
